Changes over 5 years....

Five years doesn't seem that long to me.  But, it's enough time for things to change.  Being in my present condition, I can't help but compare things that are different for me in this pregnancy than they were only 5 years ago.

1. Maternity bottoms:
I think they were coming out when I was pregnant 5 years ago, but I never bought any then.  Anyway, I'm referring to all these under-the-belly skirts and pants.  They are driving me crazy!!!  I feel like my pants are gonna slide right off, since my waist and hips have fused in to one mass and/or that my underwear is falling off.  Over-the-belly clothes at least are held up by your belly!  Fortunately, I've found a consignment shop that sells maternity clothes and I think I'm gonna go over tomorrow and check again (for like the 10th time in two months) to see if they have any over-the-belly pants.

2. Testing your urine:
Now, maybe it's just this doctor office, but, I never had to test my own urine before.  In pregnancy they are testing your urine at every time and for everything.  This I understand.  What I do not understand is why the nurse has me doing this (and everyone at our clinic). Weird.

3. Maternity tops:
Again, some of these styles were probably around 5 years ago.  But, maybe it's just my mindset.  While I am happy to be pregnant I don't like to flaunt it.  Thankfully the tent-only option, that many of our mothers and grandmothers had to go through, is non-existent.  However, we've gone completely in the other direction.  I do not like these ruched, tight, maternity shirts and dresses!  The last thing I want to do is enter a room in a skin-tight shirt or dress with my belly being the first thing, and only thing, someone notices.

4. 3-D Ultrasounds:
These have been around for more than 5 years now, but they still creep me out.  I haven't gotten one and I don't want to.

Thankfully, not too much else has changed.  At least, not anything I've noticed :).

You've got to get some over the belly pants, they are heaven sent!! And I really don't know why on earth you have to test your own urine...that is crazy to me, can't they hire a Medical Assistant to do that kind of thing...is it weird I'm grossed out by my own urine? And I also didn't want a 3-D ultrasound...babies look creepy!!

OK! I can't believe that you test your own urine! I have some of the full-panel bottoms, but they would be way too short for you. I think old navy might sell the full belly ones, or they did a few years ago. Sometimes I wish I could just wear a tent when pregnant, I agree with you about some of the fashions today.

Motherhood Maternity has a ton of different styles that have the "Secret Fit Belly" so that you have the overbelly elastic, but the bottom part of the jeans look cute and fashionable. Me personally, I love the zippered jeans they used to have. I'd just wear them with a bigger belt. So much more comfortable than the over belly ones I had- they had drawstrings in them that you had to tighten. HATED those- always falling down.

What do you mean you have to test your own urine? How do you even do that? Don't you have to have certain machines or do they use test strips? Gross.

And I totally agree on the 3D ultrasounds. I think they even have 4D ultrasounds now. Not completely sure what the difference is, but they're both a little creepy looking.

It sounds like things have changed. I've never liked the underbelly pants. I had the same problem -- my pants were always falling down. I remember seeing them at Old Navy when I was pregnant with Robyn 6 years ago.

Testing your own urine -- definitely weird. Also weird -- 3-D ultrasounds. The pictures are just too freaky!

Oh, just wait until you discover the Bumbo. Best baby invention ever! I really questioned getting one for my last kid, but we use it every day still. LOVE IT!

Last pregnancy I got a skirt and pair of shorts to add to my maternity wardrobe. They had this wonderful elastic fabric around the waist that clung no matter what the waist size. So I wore them all the way through. They were at the Motherhood store. I hate those under the belly clothes too. Never work for me.
